The student newspaper, The Pow Wow, began with its first edition published on December 15, 1931, concluding the end of Ouachita Parish Junior College’s first semester. The newspaper was later renamed The Hawkeye in 2006. Ouachita Parish Junior College went through a series of name changes as well, signifying our progress from a junior college to a state college then to a university. Not only is the newspaper a snapshot reflecting our school’s history throughout the years, each edition is also snapshot of the social and cultural norms of our nation and our world.
The Pow Wow was copied to microfilm around 1984. The images on this site, are the digitized copies of this microfilm collection. Some of the pages had to be replaced because some of the text was difficult to read. However, time did not permit the reproduction of all the images. The contents of the newspapers are being displayed in their historical context and don’t necessarily reflect the views and beliefs of the University of Louisiana Monroe.
